Half Of A Yellow Sun, the N1.8 billion daring film project, will be released in Nigerian Cinemas on April 25th, 2014. The film comprises of a star studded cast; British born Nigerian Actor, Chinwetel Ejiofor (BAFTA winner 2014, Oscar Nominee 2014 for Twelve Years A slave), Thandie Newton (BAFTA Winner), Anika Rose, Genevieve Nnaji (AMMA winner), O.C Ukeje (AMVCA winner) and the stallion award winning songstress, Onyeka Onwenu. Directed by creative director/playwright, Biyi Bandele, the film brings to life the novel written by multiple award winning author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The novel has sold over one million copies worldwide, and has been translated into thirty languages.
Shareman Media, the Nigerian producer of the flick, has the film being theatrically distributed by FilmOne Distribution, an independent film distribution company poised to provide top notch services in line with International best practices to all Cinema Operators in Nigeria and film studios/producers. Half Of A Yellow Sun had its world premiere at the 38th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada, and subsequently in Europe at the BFI London Film Festival, London. The Film will also be released in cinemas in Australia from 27th March, in the UK from 11th April, and in the US in the early summer.
The film is an epic love story set in Nigeria in the 60’s and inter-weaves the lives of four people caught up in the turbulence of the Nigerian civil war. Half of a Yellow Sun was shot in the Tinapa Studios, Calabar and in various locations in Creek Town, and employed several hundreds of local residents. The bulk of the funding came from Nigeria, with large numbers of Nigerian cast and crew. The success of the Film at the cinemas will require the support of all Nigerians, to ensure that filmmakers/producers who want to make quality based films “telling our own stories” can access the required funding.
